Emergency transitions are so hard. Completely agree with what you were saying about the adult not being at their best and so this can make it harder to guide a child through it. My tip would be to name the situation and then discuss the impact. So talk about emergencies or surprises (flat tyre or present) in a safe space and talk about how they make you feel (that they can evoke big and small feelings and be positive and negative) and what the impact will be. Then when you have an emergency or surprise refer back to that conversation. That's the theory anyway!!
